DHEC Reopens Wallace Creek Shellfish Harvesting in Beaufort County; Habersham Creek Remains Closed

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Nov. 7, 2019

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) will reopen Wallace Creek shellfish harvesting beds in Beaufort County, the agency announced today. However, shellfish harvesting in Habersham Creek will remain closed.

"Water quality data indicate that bacteria levels are once again suitable for shellfish harvesting in the Conditional Management Area of Wallace Creek," said Mike Pearson, Manager of DHEC's Shellfish Sanitation Section.

Shellfish harvesting at Habersham Creek closed Oct. 16 due to excessive rainfall and will be further evaluated prior to being reopened for harvest.

For more information on clam and oyster harvesting areas in Beaufort County, call DHEC's Beaufort Environmental Affairs Office at 843-846-1030 or visit  www.scdhec.gov/shellfish.
