Washington, DC--The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its monthly public meeting on Wednesday, April 22, 2020, at 5:30 pm. As the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak continues to spread globally, the State Board is taking the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our members, staff, and public. Therefore, this meeting will be held as a video web conference. 

The State Board and the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) continue to work on updating social studies standards in the District. The State Board encourages DCPS and public charter school students to pre-record a video of themselves discussing their thoughts and perspective on social studies in the District. The videos will be included as testimony during our virtual public meeting on Wednesday, April 22, 2020, and uploaded to the State Board’s YouTube channel. Videos should be no longer than three (3) minutes and should be sent to [email protected] by Friday, April 17 at 5 p.m. 

The State Board welcomes Paul Kihn, Deputy Mayor for Education (DME), to present information on its District-wide education strategy and the efforts the DME is making in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The DME will address response efforts (distance learning, technology equity and meal distribution) and recovery planning (adjusted school calendars, changes to education requirements, and next steps). 

The State Board will also consider a number of items on a consent agenda including items shifted to this meeting from our canceled March public meeting. All of the materials for the meeting can be found here.

Public Testimony

All students, parents, educators, and community members are invited to provide testimony at public meetings. Individuals and representatives of organizations who wish to comment at a public meeting are asked to notify Board staff in advance by phone at (202) 741-0888 or by email at [email protected] no later than 48 hours in advance of the meeting. An electronic copy of testimony must be received no later than 48 hours prior to the meeting. Individuals are asked to furnish their names, addresses, telephone numbers, and organizational affiliation.

About the SBOE

The DC State Board of Education is an independent agency within the Government of the District of Columbia that advises the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), the District’s state education agency. The State Board is comprised of nine elected representatives, each representing their respective wards, with one member representing DC at large, and two appointed student representatives. The State Board approves statewide education policies and sets academic standards, while OSSE oversees education within the District and manages federal education funding.
