PennDOT Announces Online Plans Display for Route 772 (West High Street) Project in Manheim Borough, Lancaster County

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an online plans display regarding the Route 772 (West High Street) bridge replacement project. This project is located at the bridge that carries West High Street over Rife Run in Manheim Borough, Lancaster County, roughly a half-mile southwest from the intersection with Main Street in the borough.   The purpose of this project is to address structural deficiencies of the bridge, which was built in 1948, and provide continued safe and efficient crossing of Route 772 (West High Street) over Rife Run.

The project consists of replacing a two-span steel girder bridge with a single-span, press-stressed concrete spread box beam bridge. New approach pavement, rock scour protection, guide rail, drainage, sidewalks, and plantings along affected channel banks will be included in the project. The overall width of the bridge will be increased to accommodate the new sidewalks on both sides of the bridge, while the width of traffic lanes and shoulders will remain unchanged.

The bridge will be constructed in half widths, with traffic reduced to a single lane controlled by a temporary traffic signal. The Logan Park parking lot adjacent to the bridge in the southwest quadrant will be closed to vehicular traffic during construction. Pedestrian traffic through the parking lot will be maintained to allow access to the soccer fields. Access to Mummau Park for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic will be maintained using the temporary traffic signal.

The project is currently in design and construction work is expected to take place in the 2021 construction season. Construction is expected to take 15-to-18 months to complete.

In accordance with Governor Wolf's COVID-19 mitigation efforts, the plans display will be held online only. A digital version of the information is now available to view online until July 31, 2020.

Information, including roadway and bridge plans and an interactive comment form, can be found by visiting the PennDOT District 8 website, www.penndot.gov/District8, clicking on Public Meetings listed under the Resources heading, and choosing the Lancaster County box then the tile marked West High Street Over Rife Run. The purpose of the plans display is to introduce the project and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns with the project. It is also an opportunity for the public to review and comment on the project’s potential effect upon Cultural Resources pursuant to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation’s 36 CFR Part 800 regulations implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
