Hoyer Statement on the One-Year Anniversary of the Trump Administration’s Family Separation Policy
“Today marks one year since the Trump Administration instituted its family separation policy, ripping children from their parents’ arms at the border. Despite court orders to reunite families, the Administration continues to struggle to do so because of mismanagement, shoddy record keeping, and a clear disdain for the basic human rights of these migrant parents and children. The decision to implement this policy and failure to reunite every family calls into question how far this Administration has strayed from the principles and values upon which our country was founded and for which so many patriotic Americans gave their lives. “I have visited the border, and I will never forget meeting with a mother in El Paso whose two young daughters were ripped from her arms without any explanation. We must see that all children are returned to the arms of their loving parents – every last one. House Democrats will continue to conduct oversight to ensure that all families are reunited. President Trump instituted this heinous policy and will be held responsible – by Congress and by history – for its consequences.”
