“Two years ago, House Republicans stood in the White House Rose Garden with President Trump to cheer the passage of a bill that would strip health insurance coverage from 20 million Americans and end protections for those with pre-existing conditions.  Thankfully, the American people made their opposition clear, and repeal of the Affordable Care Act failed in the Senate. 

“Now, instead of listening to the American people and working with Democrats to stabilize health insurance markets and lower health care and prescription drug costs, the Trump Administration is pursuing a dangerous lawsuit to achieve what it failed to do two years ago.  Its lawsuit in Texas seeks to invalidate the entire law, including provisions allowing young people under age twenty-six to be covered under their parents’ plans, the ban on charging women higher premiums than men for the same coverage, and the cost-saving subsidies that make it possible for millions to afford quality coverage.  Those with pre-existing conditions, such as Americans living with asthma, diabetes, and other chronic ailments, would be made effectively uninsurable. 

“As one of our first acts in the Majority, House Democrats took action to defend the Affordable Care Act in that lawsuit, and we will continue to do everything in our power to keep 20 million Americans from being kicked off their coverage, to protect those with pre-existing conditions, and to bring costs down for patients and consumers.  Over the next two weeks, I will bring legislation to the House Floor to counter the Administration’s sabotage of the law and attempts to destabilize health care markets, including the Protecting Americans with Pre-Existing Conditions Act on the Floor next week.  Every American deserves access to quality, affordable health coverage.”
