House Democrats Take Action to Address the Climate Crisis

Message from the Democratic Whip

This week, I was pleased that the House took a first step toward addressing climate change by passing H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act. The bill prohibits the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement and forces the Trump Administration to develop its own plan to meet the goals set out previously by the United States. House Democrats have held over 30 hearings on this issue, and we recognize the urgent need to address climate change. We will continue to work on substantive proposals to act on this crisis, and I look forward to bringing additional legislation to the Floor.

On Tuesday, I joined Democratic leaders for a meeting with President Trump to discuss infrastructure, and I was pleased that the President agreed we ought to pass a big, bold infrastructure investment package. We have agreed to a second meeting in three weeks, and it is up to President Trump to work with us to identify new revenue to support that investment. In addition to the discussions with the White House, House Democrats are holding hearings our infrastructure challenges. At the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing this week, I testified on the importance of investing in twenty-first century infrastructure, which is key to remaining competitive and ensuring more families and businesses can make it in America.

Tomorrow will mark two years since House Republicans passed their TrumpCare bill, which would have taken away health coverage and protections for millions of Americans, including those with pre-existing conditions. Next week, House Democrats will pass H.R. 986, Protecting Americans with Pre-Existing Conditions Act, which blocks the Administration from sabotaging the Affordable Care Act and making comprehensive coverage more expensive for those with pre-existing conditions. I will be urging House Republicans – many of whom have said they support protections for those with pre-existing conditions – to join us in supporting this important legislation.
