Questex’s American Salon Partners with the Fashion Institute of Technology to Preserve 142 Years of Archived Issues at the Library Unit of Special Collections and College Archives

American Salon’s Collection Offers Insights into the Beauty Trends, People, Historical Moments and the Movers, Shakers and Hair History-makers that Have Helped Define American Culture

NEW YORK, April 17, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Questex’s American Salon is partnering with the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) to preserve 142 years of archived issues on all things beauty at the Library unit of Special Collections and College Archives (SPARC).

/EIN News/ -- The American Salon archive is comprised of issues that shine a spotlight on the beauty industry from 1877 to December 2018. These issues capture everything from iconic hair trends through the decades, beauty industry milestones, changes in beauty products, packaging and advertisements, and hair’s key role in film, television and music.

Moreover, the American Salon archives encompass the history of beauty, having captured nearly every significant achievement, including the Marcel wave in the late 1800s; the rise of haircolor and permanent waves in prominence in the 1940s and 1950s; the botanical boom that took root in the 1980s; and the rise of the men’s grooming movement in the 1990s. The American Salon issues also celebrated the advent of celebrity and legendary hairdressers like Vidal Sassoon and Trevor Sorbie, among others, and published an award-winning gatefold cover and feature.

FIT’s SPARC branch is a highly specialized repository for students and researchers worldwide, and its collections have been vetted for their rarity or importance in the fields of fashion, textile, costume and interior design. FIT’s students and thousands of visitors each year will gain access to American Salon’s rich history and legacy as the professional beauty authority.

Since its debut in 1877, American Salon has played a pivotal role in the professional beauty industry. Today, American Salon reaches more than 1.4 million salon professionals with fashion-forward imagery to innovative techniques, business building concepts and pop culture.

“We’ve been chronicling the beauty industry for 142 years. The archived issues of American Salon are a gold mine of information that will continue to empower the beauty community for years to come,” said Kelley Donahue, Editorial Director of American Salon. “We’re thrilled to be partnering with FIT to preserve the history of American Salon, our industry and to also provide FIT students and visitors with access to more than a century of professional beauty history.”

“The Fashion Institute of Technology-SUNY's Gladys Marcus Library is honored that American Salon has selected its unit of Special Collections and College Archives as the home for its archives,” says Karen Trivette, FIT Professor and Head of Special Collections & College Archives. “The issues will be a wonderfully rich and historical resource for our students, faculty and visiting researchers, and are a valued addition to our holdings.”

The archived issues will be available at the FIT’s Library unit of SPARC in the summer of 2019. For more information, visit fitnyc.edu/library/sparc.
