South Florida Sun Sentinel Awarded 2019 Pulitzer Prize in the Public Service Category

Capital Gazette Given Special Citation by Pulitzer Board

CHICAGO, April 16, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Tribune Publishing Company (NASDAQ:TPCO) properties were recognized Monday by the 2019 Pulitzer Prize Board as the South Florida Sun Sentinel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in the Public Service category, and the Capital Gazette of Annapolis, Maryland, received a Special Citation.

Each organization was recognized for its coverage of a mass shooting: The Sun Sentinel for the events at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida and the Capital Gazette for the violence that occurred inside its own newsroom.

In addition, the organizations were Pulitzer finalists in two other categories: The Sun Sentinel for Breaking News and the Capital Gazette in Editorial Writing.

This is the Sun Sentinel’s second Pulitzer (they previously won in 2013) and the 61st Pulitzer for Tribune Publishing.

“We are humbled to receive these awards as we remember those, including our colleagues, killed in the attacks,” said Timothy P. Knight, Tribune Publishing CEO and President. “Our journalists worked, through their own grief, to tell vital stories about what happened in Parkland and Annapolis. Across our company, we will continue to provide readers with the journalism they need to make the decisions that improve their lives.”

In its announcement, the Pulitzer Committee praised the Sun Sentinel for “exposing failings by school and law enforcement officials before and after the deadly shooting rampage.” Following that coverage, parents’ groups and other organizations forced wholesale changes in the local sheriff’s office and amendments to Florida’s gun laws.

“Our local journalism includes stories that break your heart, but also provides news of resilience and progress that reflect the best of our community,” said Julie Anderson, Editor-in-Chief, Sun Sentinel. “This announcement is a tribute to those cited by the Pulitzer Committee and to everyone in our newsroom.”

In its citation to the Capital Gazette, the Pulitzer Committee highlighted the newsroom’s “courageous response to the largest killing of journalists in U.S. history.” The Committee also bequeathed to the newsroom’s staff a $100,000 prize to be used “to further the newspaper’s journalistic mission.”
