Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström’s second visit to Georgia highlights strong EU-Georgia ties

Commissioner Malmström is visiting Georgia on 18-19 March 2019. This is Ms Malmström’s second visit to Tbilisi, Georgia as EU Trade Commissioner following one on 21 March 2016.

The main objective is to take stock of the implementation of the EU-Georgia Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) - now in place for almost five years. Today around a quarter of Georgian exports are going to the EU. Trade between the EU and Georgia has been steadily increasing and reached €2.8 billion last year.

Commissioner Malmström’s programme includes meetings with H.E. Salome Zourabichvili, President of Georgia , H.E. Mamuka Bakhtadze Prime Minister of Georgia and Mr. Giorgi Kobulia – Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development. The Commissioner will also meet with civil society organisations as well as attending the EU-Georgia Business Forum. The Commissioner is also visiting Tiflistex, a local company exporting socks to the EU, to see how Georgian firms are making use of the DCFTA.
