Hoyer Statement on House Introduction of H.R. 5, the Equality Act

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the introduction of H.R. 5, the Equality Act:

“Protecting LGBT Americans and their families against discrimination remains a top priority of House Democrats, and our reintroduction of the Equality Act today reflects our commitment to doing so.  This legislation, which I am proud to cosponsor, would ensure that LGBT people are fully protected under our civil rights laws, making it illegal to discriminate against them in housing, employment, jury service, credit, education, and public accommodations.  I commend Rep. Cicilline for again sponsoring this important bill, and I look forward to bringing it to the Floor for a vote, once it has been advanced through the committee process.

“Congress must pass the Equality Act without delay.  The Trump Administration, as we were reminded yesterday with its ban on transgender Americans serving in our military and with its guidance making it harder for transgender students to attend school, has embraced a policy of discrimination against the LGBT community.  The President may have broken his promises to LGBT Americans, but House Democrats will never stop fighting for equality, justice, and respect for all.  We must ensure that every American, no matter who they love or how they identify, has every opportunity to make it in America.”
