The country was the 46th nation to join the organization, since then it has sought through its diplomacy to contribute to the peaceful solution of the main conflicts in Africa, with highlight on the Great Lakes Region.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry underlined, in 2018, that the entrance of the country in this African organization was the result of an intense diplomatic battle undertaken by the late and first president of Angola, Agostinho Neto.
