Former Employees of University of Maryland Medical System Suing for Unpaid Overtime Wages

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, UNITED STATES, January 14, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ -- On December 18, 2018, former employees (Plaintiffs) of University of Maryland Medical System Corporation (UMMS) filed a class and collective action lawsuit against the company to recover unpaid overtime wages. UMMS provides healthcare services through various facilities in Maryland. UMMS staffs individuals in numerous hourly positions, including Unit Secretaries, Security Guards and Medical Coders. Plaintiffs were among these hourly employees.

Plaintiffs brought their case on behalf of themselves and other hourly employees who work or worked for UMMS. Plaintiffs allege that UMMS violated the Maryland Wage and Hour Law by automatically deducting time for lunch breaks, even when Plaintiffs worked through lunch. Plaintiffs allege that they suffered automatic deductions ranging from thirty (30) to sixty (60) minutes regardless of whether or not they worked through lunch. As a result, Plaintiffs claim that they and other hourly employees were denied overtime wages.

Plaintiffs’ attorney Benjamin L. Davis, III of the Law Offices of Peter T. Nicholl explains, “While automatic time clock deduction systems can be legal under state and federal wage laws, there has to be a mechanism for employees to report that they worked through lunch and receive payment for that time. In the present matter there was no such mechanism, and Plaintiffs were instructed not to report the times they worked through lunch.”

Additional information regarding how other hourly employees who work or worked for UMMS can join this case can be found here or by calling the Law Offices of Peter T. Nicholl at 410-244-7005.
