MT. VERNON, NEW YORK, USA, December 19, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Knights of Columbus donates new wheelchairs to Wartburg

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y.—December 4, 2018—The Knights of Columbus Council #410 in Mount Vernon donated four wheelchairs to Wartburg as part of its Global Wheelchair Mission.

The Knights of Columbus, a fraternal benefit society founded in 1882, donates wheelchairs each year to the Catholic Church and other organizations in need. The American Wheelchair Mission, headed by President and Knight Christopher Lewis, son of famed actor/comedian Jerry Lewis, has donated thousands of wheelchairs. With 460 donations in New York State alone since it began, the program is only in its second year in Mount Vernon. Knights of Columbus members also volunteer their time to lead a game night every Thursday with Wartburg’s nursing home residents.

Dr. David J. Gentner, Wartburg President & CEO said, “Game nights have become an integral part of the activities calendar in our skilled nursing facility and I am most thankful to the Knights of Columbus for their time and personal dedication to improving the quality of life of our residents.”

Knights of Columbus members Bob Dowgiallo, Financial Secretary; Carmine Bartoli, Trustee; Ed Bruno, Grand Knight; and Fred DeMaso, Trustee, presented Wartburg with the wheelchairs. Mr. DeMaso stated, “It’s an honor for us to do this for Wartburg,” on behalf of the Knights of Columbus.

“We are so thankful to the Knights of Columbus for this generous donation,” said Angela Ciminello, Vice President, Development & Marketing at Wartburg. “
I had the pleasure of meeting their members and their passion and dedication to helping others, in this case those convalescing in our rehabilitation center, is exemplary. It is an honor to partner with this amazing organization to ensure those entrusted to our care maximize their recovery and return home faster and healthier.”

The society was originally founded to provide assistance to widows and children in need; its mission has now expanded to feeding the hungry, supporting the Special Olympics and other causes, and aligns with Wartburg’s commitment to nurture the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health of its community.

“It is wonderful that two mission-driven organizations can work together for the needs of our community and for those residents from Mount Vernon and Westchester County that utilize Wartburg’s programs and services,” said Ulrich J. Rosa, Wartburg Board Member. Mr. Rosa facilitated the introduction of the Knights of Columbus to Wartburg.
