Many actors beat themselves up about failing to secure a role, or blowing an audition, or even not attending a party and missing out on the chance to network.

After watching countless blockbusters at an early age, there aren’t many people who don’t want the glamour, fame, wealth and lifestyle that comes with being a successful actor. Oftentimes, it’s hard, thankless work which sees you on set for days or weeks at a time. So with that in mind, here are a number of things that Dalyboy wishes he was told before he chose acting as a career.

-So much of acting is out of your control

What these new actors need to keep in mind is that much of being successful in acting (and many other things in life) is out of your control and in the hands of other people. “You don’t have to keep putting yourself down just because you didn’t get a call back.” Says Dalyboy Belgason. “Your performance might have been perfect, but someone else’s might have been slightly better. That doesn’t mean you did badly, just that someone else made the call not to hire you this time.”

-Let the movies be your school

This doesn’t mean to skip acting school entirely - acting lessons are of extreme importance, especially the basics - but one of the best ways of learning is by mimicking others, in particular those who are masters at the craft. By watching films and other media, you can take note of what the experts do and apply it to your own acting. The best part about this is the diversity that you can encounter simply by going to the cinema. And you don’t have to limit yourself to just the acting either. Films present the opportunity for studying writing, acting, direction, set design and every other discipline attached to film.

-Don’t avoid networking

“You might be slightly awkward at parties and you might not feel like going out all the time,” Says Dalyboy Hyppolite. “But networking is of vital importance if you’re going to make it in the acting game.” It’s important to meet other people in the industry, to get them asking, “who is this person?” Oftentimes, in many industries all over the world, it’s about who you know and not what you know.
