Decent Work, Corporate Responsibility and the EU-Central America Association Agreement: Contributing to Sustainable Economic Growth

Events Guatemala city, Guatemala, 16-17 May 2018

On 16 and 17 May 2018 in Guatemala, the European Commission will hold an event on Decent Work, Corporate Responsibility and the EU-Central America Association Agreement.

The event follows from a previous seminar on Responsible Global Value Chains organised in Costa Rica in 2017 and will aim to discuss and share experience on business' contributions to Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG8 – decent work and economic growth).

The 2030 Agenda presents a renewed opportunity for all actors to reinforce their commitment to promote sustainable development. The EU-Central America Association Agreement aims to maximise the leverage of increased trade and investment to promote inclusive and sustainable economic development, full and productive employment and decent work. In this context, the private sector has a key role to play in advancing SDG8 through the implementation of responsible labour practices and business conduct in supply chains.

The event will bring together business and civil society, policymakers and international organisations to showcase and discuss international guidelines and best practices on responsible business conduct and their contribution to SDG8, the role of government in supporting contributions of the private sector to SDG8 as well as best practices in the textile and sugar sectors.

A workshop will be organised to develop capacities for responsible and sustainable workplace practices based on specific scenarios.

The event is organised with the support of the ILO (International Labour Organization), the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), ATEPECA (Technical Assistance for Strategic Programming in Central America), centrarRSE, MINECO (Ministry of Economy Guatemala), and MINTRAB (Ministry of Labour).
