Australian Ambassador to Egypt Announces Australia as the International Guest of Honour at the 2017 Cairo International Film Festival and Launches Orange Day Campaign with the National Council for Women

Australian Ambassador to Egypt HE Mr. Neil Hawkins alongside Dr. Magda Youssef, President of the Cairo International Film Festival announced Australia as the International Guest of Honour at the 39th edition of the Cairo International Film Festival.

The Festival will run from 21-30 November 2017 and will feature a showcase of 10 Australian films.

Ambassador Hawkins also launched an Orange Day campaign for the Film Festival with the National Council for Women, headed by Dr. Maya Morsy, coinciding with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November.

The Campaign will use the National Council for Women’s “Ta’a Marbouta” initiative to promote Orange day throughout the Film Festival, and raise awareness of the positive role the film industry can play to eliminate violence against women in Egypt and the world.

It will highlight the negative impact that violence against women on screen has on society and will encourage Egyptian actors, directors and entertainment industry leaders to take a pledge to eliminate violence against women in films.

The campaign coincides with the 2017 Year of the Egyptian Woman and the existing work of the National Council for Women and UN Women's ’16 Days of Activism’ from 25 November to 10 December.
