Vancouver Fire Prevention Company Says London Fire Tragedy Highlights the Need for Safety Equipment

Vancouver fire prevention company says tragic London fire demonstrates the need for a maintained fire alarm system

/EINPresswire.com/ -- VANCOUVER, BC--(Marketwired - August 23, 2017) - As a Vancouver fire prevention company, Community Fire Prevention understands that safety and preparation can make all the difference when facing a disaster. Last June, a devastating fire ripped through a London high-rise building, leaving nearly 80 people dead.

Apartment fires are not uncommon, but the total devastation of the 24-storey tower could have been reduced if the building had been equipped with a proper fire alarm system. For more, go to: http://www.comfire.ca/blog/tragic-london-apartment-fire-highlights-importance-maintained-fire-alarm-system/

The building had no fire alarms, and confusion and conflicting advice inhibited the evacuation. Some residents were told earlier not to leave their units in the event of a fire. Survivors relied on personal calls from neighbors, urging them to flee the building.

After the incident, London's Mayor Sadiq Khan said, "We can't have…a situation where people's safety is put at risk because of bad advice being given or if it is the case, as has been alleged, of tower blocks not being properly serviced or maintained."

A functional fire alarm system is always the first line of defense against a blaze, warning residents when smoke or excessive heat is detected. It triggers a loud alarm throughout the building, urging residents to evacuate. In addition, a monitoring system installed in conjunction with the fire alarm can automatically alert emergency services when an event is detected.

In Metro Vancouver and surrounding municipalities, sprinkler and fire alarm systems are mandated for new buildings (and in some cases, during major renovations or upgrades). Both the BC Building Code and BC Fire Code are very progressive with this legislation overseeing Fire and Life Safety.

Community Fire Prevention can test, identify, and repair any deficiencies to the fire and life safety systems in a building. With expert technicians who perform annual testing and maintenance of sprinkler systems, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, and more, they work to ensure the ongoing safety of residents or employees in the event of fire, thereby reducing the potential for tragic and unnecessary loss of life.
