San Antonio Veterinarian Family Pet Hospital of Stone Oak is Emphasizing 4th of July Pet Fireworks Safety This Year

SAN ANTONIO, June 25, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- 4th of July is the time for the celebration of our nation. However, this time of year can also bring a number of safety hazards for pets. Dr. Michael O. Woolley, Dr. Carolyn Stewart, and the entire staff at Family Pet Hospital of Stone Oak would like to take the time to highlight these risks so that they can be avoided.

One of the biggest dangers of this holiday is potential pet reactions to fireworks. Almost all animals react to loud noises, and dogs who are outdoors are at risk for becoming extremely frightened running away and injuring themselves. Keeping pets indoors during the 4th of July is one solution. However, if they will be allowed at an outdoor party, pet owners should strongly consider having their pets microchipped so that they can be more easily recovered should they become lost. Sedatives are also an option to help keep your pet calmer during this time.

Outfitting pets with a collar and tag can also be helpful, but microchips can be scanned even if the collar falls off. Pet owners should also keep a recent photo of the pet on hand in case “Lost Pet” signs will have to be made and posted around the neighborhood.

Additional risks to pets during the summer season include possible poisoning from “people food.” Some of the most dangerous foods for pets include chocolate, grapes, raisins, candy, avocados, dairy, nuts, fatty foods, alcoholic drinks, and processed foods.

Pets should be kept well hydrated throughout the day to avoid heatstroke. A small wading pool can be provided to allow them to take a dip, cool off, and regulate their body temperature so that they stay safe.

Insect repellant or sunscreen could pose a risk as well. Be sure to only use formulations that are specially developed for pets and safe for use on animals.

Dr. Michael O. Woolley of Family Pet Hospital of Stone Oak says, “Everyone loves the 4th of July, but it’s important that pets not be lost in the shuffle during the festivities. Fireworks can be particularly distressing for some animals. Equipping them with a microchip can allow for easier recovery should they run away.”
