ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND, UNITED STATES, March 21, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Forty dialysis patients are feeling a little bit warmer during their treatments during Kidney Month thanks to a generous group of employees at Keryx Biopharmaceuticals. Keryx makes a medicine used to treat hyperphosphatemia in dialysis patients, and the company’s employees wanted to find a way to give back to the dialysis community.

On average, people with kidney failure receive dialysis three times a week at a dialysis center; each session lasts three to four hours. Members of the Keryx employee volunteer committee thought dialysis patients would enjoy having cozy fleece blankets to keep them warm while receiving their dialysis treatment and organized a blanket making drive at Keryx. Keryx purchased the materials and designated a day during which any employee could help work on the blankets in a conference room. Keryx employees worked together to create a total of 40 brightly colored blankets.

“These blankets are a tangible way to show that Keryx isn’t just a company that manufactures medicine, but is a group of people who care deeply about people living with end-stage renal disease” said Nicole Corcoran, chairperson of Keryx’s volunteer committee. “We know that dialysis patients may feel cold during their treatments, so our blankets are not only warming them up, but we also hope that they are cheering them up.”

The Keryx team reached out to the American Kidney Fund (AKF), the nation’s leading nonprofit working on behalf of Americans with kidney disease, to help distribute the blankets to dialysis centers. AKF delivered the blankets to two South Carolina dialysis centers in areas that had been affected by Hurricane Matthew and one dialysis center in Rockville, Maryland, where AKF is headquartered.

“When we provided the blankets to the patients, they were so excited to have them,” said Kim Nelson, a Licensed Master Social Worker at FMC Low Country Dialysis Center in Port Royal, South Carolina, which received a shipment of blankets. “We can’t thank Keryx enough.”
