Egypt: Cinema, “Tale of Tales” at the Italian Cultural Institute
“Tale of Tales” (“Il racconto dei racconti”), a film by Matteo Garrone, will be screened at the Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo on 12 February (7 p.m.). The story takes place in the 1600s. A queen can no longer smile, two sisters make up a misunderstanding to attract the attention of a king while another sovereign organises a joust in which to marry off his daughter.
Matteo Garrone draws freely from three stories in “Lo cunto de li cunti”, a collection of fables written in old Neapolitan language by Giambattista Basile between 1500 and 1600. “Il racconto dei racconti” – nominee for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Festival in 2015 – has won three Nastri d’Argento and seven David Di Donatello (starring Salma Hayek, John C. Reilly, Christian Lees, Alba Rohrwacher. Fantastic, 125 min. – Italy).
