Heisler, is pushing for a two-pronged approach to making our homes safer from dangerous chemicals and toxins -- public awareness campaigns and increased screening for consumer goods.

"Manufacturers include dangerous chemicals in some of the most common consumer products," said Heisler. "Add that to the toxins found in many homes -- lead or asbestos -- and it's pretty clear that we aren't doing enough to protect people from overexposure to dangerous contaminants."

The New York Times reported in 2015 that most products sold to consumers aren't subjected to screening for safety. Many commonly used products, such as the herbicide Roundup, have been found to contain chemicals that have serious health implications for users, including non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry lists contaminants such as lead, asbestos, vinyl chloride and benzene, among others, as carrying the risk for both short-term and long-term health consequences to people who are exposed to them.

"We know that several products, from makeup to vinyl flooring, pose the potential for serious illness and injury, yet our current regulatory system is still slow to act to protect consumers," Heisler said. "We have to ask why this is the case, and what we can do to stop these chemicals from entering our homes and workplaces."

The chemical lobby spent over $120,000 per member of Congress in 2014, per the New York Times. Since that time, the Toxic Substances Control Act was signed into law in 2016. Though the law was touted by lawmakers as a step forward in consumer protection, critics said that the law lacks adequate consumer protections against hazardous chemicals.

"Our laws don't do enough to shield people from dangers in our schools, workplaces and homes," Heisler said. "It seems like we're leaving it up to consumers to do their own research about the products they buy. But our lawmakers aren't doing their part to educate or protect our citizens. This has to change."
