Allergy Season Worsening and Impacting Oral Health

/EINPresswire.com/ -- :DentalPlans Offers Tips on How to Combat Fall Allergies

PLANTATION, FL--(Marketwired - December 05, 2016) - Spring and Summer allergy seasons have passed, but many are still suffering from allergies. And, conditions may be worsening due to triggers like mold, dust and the biggest culprit -- pollen.

According to WebMD, more than 30 million Americans suffer from pollen allergies, which may cause hay fever or allergic rhinitis (sinusitis). Even if allergens like ragweed are afar, just one plant can produce a million lightweight pollen grains daily that can travel hundreds of miles in the wind.

"We are seeing the impact this allergy season," said Bill Chase, vice president of marketing for :DentalPlans. "We've received an influx of Telemedicine requests and many are mistaking their allergy symptoms for the flu."

Conditions may deteriorate. European researchers forecast worsening allergens over time, due to warmer weather. The U.S. may feel the impact as well in areas exposed to ragweed, according to NBC's TODAY website.

Typical symptoms include congestion sneezing, coughing and a runny nose. More severe allergies induce headaches, face pressure and even mouth discomfort.

"Allergies can cause mouth sensitivity and major tooth and gum pain, especially in those who develop sinusitis or hay fever," said Chase.

To lessen conditions, :DentalPlans recommends:

1. Washing vegetables and fruit as pollen can cling to it

2. Checking the daily pollen forecast and avoiding the outdoors during peak hours

3. Cleaning up after being outside to avoid tracking pollen

4. Keeping home and car windows closed

5. Replacing furnace filters, cleaning chimneys and inspecting firewood for mold

For those with hay fever or allergic rhinitis (sinusitis):

1. Brush and floss twice daily and gently. Try ProNamel toothpaste for sensitivity.

2. Treat your allergies early -- try antihistamines, decongestants and/or nasal sprays/rinses

3. Connect with a nurse or board certified doctor to avoid a trip to the doctor or ER
