NAV CANADA Issues Report on Greenhouse Gas Emissions Savings

/EINPresswire.com/ -- OTTAWA, ON--(Marketwired - October 03, 2016) - NAV CANADA released today its Collaborative Initiatives for Emissions Reductions (CIFER) report, which summarizes the results of efforts by the Company and its customers and industry partners to reduce the aviation industry's environmental footprint.

"NAV CANADA has undertaken numerous activities designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel burn from aviation activity," said Neil Wilson, President & CEO. "In 2015 alone, these initiatives resulted in a reduction in emissions of 1.4 million tonnes and fuel savings of over 570 million litres.

"We work closely with our customers to better understand how aircraft fly most efficiently and what changes we can make to reduce emissions and fuel burn, all while ensuring the safety of the system. From 1997, when we began some of these initiatives, to 2020, we estimate that they will have reduced emissions by a total of 21 million tonnes," said Wilson.

CIFER spotlights innovative initiatives that have made a significant impact and that represent a departure from traditional methods. Among these are improvements in the management of flights in oceanic airspace, that allow more aircraft to achieve their optimum route and flight level, helping to cut flying times, fuel burn and emissions; and the use of polar routes, which provide more efficient routing for flights travelling between North America and parts of Asia.
