Messoyakhaneftegaz, a Gazprom Neft—Rosneft joint enterprise, has successfully completed construction of a unique-trajectory well at the Vostochno-Messoyakhskoye field. Well no. 380 is set at a vertical depth of 800 metres, has a horizontal deviation of 1.9 kilometres, a total drilled (measured) depth of 2.7 kilometres, and involved total penetration (tunnelling operations, including two pilot wells) of 4.4 kilometres.
This unique well was constructed in a total 25 days, and has an actual production rate of 146 tonnes of oil per day.
Under international well classifications for extended reach drilling (ERD), the rating for the Messoyakhskoye well (2.4) points to construction as being exceptionally challenging, with a drilling difficulty index (DDI) of 6.64 — one of the highest such classifications in Russia.
Aydar Sarvarov, CEO, Messoyakhaneftegaz, commented: “The technologies used in developing the Vostochno-Messosyakhskoye field have made possible a significant increase in coverage of oil-saturated acreage under the challenging geological conditions of this deposit, as well as a 400-metre layer of permafrost. Apart from this, cutting-edge practices have allowed the unique ecosystem of the Arctic zone to be protected, as a result of reducing the extent of land subject to drilling operations.”
The Messoyakha group of fields includes the Vostochno (Eastern) and Zapadno (Western) Messoyakhsky acreages, both of which are owned by Messoyakhaneftegaz CJSC, jointly owned by Gazprom Neft and Rosneft. Gazprom Neft is operator on the project.
The fields, originally discovered in the 1980s, are the northernmost of all onshore fields in Russia discovered to date. The Messoyakha fields are located in the Gydan Peninsula, in the Tazovsky district of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, 340 kilometres north of Novy Urengoy.
