Workshop at LCCC will cover what it takes to join the force. New website encourages females and minority candidates to apply. Elyria seeks 10 police officers.

ELYRIA, Ohio, Sept. 30, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Elyria and Lorain Police Departments have combined to create an Ohio and touching-state recruitment campaign called "Join the Force Now," according to a joint announcement. As a kick off, a workshop at Lorain County Community College (LCCC) on Saturday, October 22 will focus on what it takes to become a police officer in Elyria. The Community Foundation of Lorain County has provided a grant for this recruiting campaign.

"Right now, the Elyria Police Department has openings for 10 police officers," said Duane Whitely, chief of police in Elyria. "We hope to motivate men and especially minorities and women to apply. We want our department to reflect the diversity found in our community."

A new webpage, www.jointheforcenow.com, contains important information about becoming a police officer and an easy-to-use application form. There are a number of videos providing overviews of both police departments covering work in the community, enumerating growth opportunities, exploring opportunities for a diverse police force and more. Website visitors will discover detailed information about basic requirements, physical fitness education/training and frequently asked questions. Lateral transfers are also welcomed by both police departments.

"In our workshop, we will cover everything anyone interested in law enforcement would want to know about typical training, testing and background," said Chief Whitely. "It takes a while for police cadets to graduate from the police academy and be ready to serve. Being involved early in the process will be helpful for potential candidates, especially since we need officers now. The workshop starts at 8 a.m. and ends at noon with plenty of time to ask questions of the many officers who will be there."

The police departments are involving community leaders, educational institutions and local organizations regarding the best way to find qualified women and minorities. The website and workshop are two additional ways, according to Whitely.
