Gazprom Neft drills the first ever 2,000-metre horizontal wellbore on the Yamal Peninsula

Gazprom Neft subsidiary Gazpromneft-Yamal has succeeded in drilling a 2,000-metre horizontal-section well at its Novoportovskoye field — the group’s longest to date. Construction of the well was completed in a little less than 25 days — 18-percent ahead of schedule, at a rate of 1,000 metres every 5.39 days. The total length of the well is 4,630 metres, at the target stratum depth of 1,830 metres below sea level, with drivage efficiency (penetration of productive strata) exceeding 94 percent.

Geological information obtained during the drilling process will allow the geological structure of the Novoportovskoye field to be more accurately defined, allowing the most effective approaches to be used in its development. Construction of development wells is being undertaken in the course of pilot testing included in the Novy Port technological project development plan.

Vadim Yakovlev, First Deputy CEO, Gazprom Neft, commented: “Gazprom Neft leads Russia’s oil industry in terms of its construction of high-technology wells. The work of our company’s Drilling Support Centre allows horizontal wellbores to be targeted with high accuracy at key strata, the thickness of which never exceeds several metres. We are using the latest drilling and enhanced oil recovery technologies in bringing the Novoportovskoye field into production, increasing development efficiency and minimising manmade impacts on the environment.”
