World leaders gather at UN to address antimicrobial resistance

Global leaders aim to agree on comprehensive, multi-sectorial approaches to the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance when they meet at the United Nations General Assembly in New York today (21 September).

EFSA contributes to the fight against antimicrobial resistance by providing scientific advice to risk managers on the risks to human and animal health related to the spread and transfer of resistance in the food chain and in animals.

EFSA experts are currently working on a scientific opinion on how to reduce the use of and the need for antimicrobials in animals. They are also assessing the risk of antimicrobial resistance emerging due to calves being fed with milk containing residues of antibiotics.

In its work, EFSA cooperates closely with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
