The Virtual Reality Foundation Launches First-Ever "Girls Make VR" Workshop at VRLA Summer Expo 2016

VRLA Event Leads Adoption of Virtual Reality With a Focus on Opening Future Tech Careers for All

/ -- LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/03/16 -- The Virtual Reality Foundation -- producer of VRLA, the world's largest virtual reality expo -- is proud to announce "Girls Make VR," a first-of-its kind workshop debuting at VRLA Summer Expo on August 5th, 2016. The workshop is specifically targeted toward young women interested in learning how to create their own VR content using the latest VR hardware and software available.

The attendees of the class will be made up of young local members of the trailblazing organization Girls Who Code, a national non-profit organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in technology, as well as members of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, and Arts Bridging the Gap. These young women, ages 13-18 with STEAM careers in mind, will get an unprecedented opportunity for hands-on learning of virtual reality technologies. The students will learn how to make their first VR scene in the Unity 5 game engine, and be able to view their work on Oculus Rift head-mounted-displays. The class is being mentored by members of Women in VR, as well as co-organized by SH//FT (Shaping Holistic Inclusion in Future Technologies), a non-profit organization that partners with industry leaders in emerging technology to sponsor opportunities for minority groups.

The Virtual Reality Foundation would like to thank CyberPower PC for its generous donation of high-end computers, Unofficial Cardboard for providing mobile VR viewers for every girl to take home, and Radeon Technologies Group for their continued support of VRLA School workshops. The Virtual Reality Foundation also thanks River Studios for sponsoring the post-workshop luncheon where the girls will meet with YouTube and virtual reality influencers. In the afternoon, they'll explore the VRLA expo floor, where they will be able to meet over 100 VR exhibitors, learn about their careers, and get to try the latest VR experiences!
