Burnaby Physiotherapy Clinic Warns Text Neck on the Rise in Children and Teenagers

Burnaby physiotherapy clinic says smart phone addiction is leading to an increase in younger patients

/EINPresswire.com/ -- BURNABY, BC--(Marketwired - July 22, 2016) - Absolute PhysioCare & Sports Rehab, a physiotherapy clinic in Burnaby, is used to treating adults for a variety of aches and pains. However, staff have noticed a spike in younger patients lately who are complaining about headaches and neck aches -- and they're ascribing this to a condition they've dubbed text neck.

"It's a disturbing trend," says clinic owner Shaila Jiwa. "If untreated, there is a potential to develop chronic neck pain, which will prevent these young people from enjoying the life ahead of them."

Unlike other patients, these youngsters do not work in front of a desk for eight hours a day and most have not been involved in a motor vehicle accident. Instead, they spend six to twelve hours a day doing an activity far more innocuous -- looking down at their smartphones and tablets.

"With trends like Pokemon Go, we are prepared to see a spike in cases. Consider having a 60 pound eight-year old wrapped around your neck two to four hours a day." That's what happens when you bend your neck 60 degrees at your cellphone or tablet, according to research published by Kenneth Hansraj in the National Library of Medicine.

"As the neck bends forward and down, the weight increases dramatically. At 15 degrees, this weight is about 27 pounds, at 30 degrees it's 40 pounds, at 45 degrees it's 49 pounds and at 60 degrees it's a staggering 60 pounds, the weight of an eight-year old." Smartphone addicted children may be carrying this weight around for 6 to 12 hours a day -- that's how long the average child looks down at a smartphone or tablet. That's more than 4000 hours a year!

"Playing on a phone the odd time will not cause injury, but over the course of many developmental years, all that weight can warp a child's neck into a nightmare of chronic conditions as they progress into adulthood."

Any child experiencing frequent neck pain or frequent headaches should seek immediate medical attention. If the underlying cause is text neck, it's imperative to consult with a well-trained physiotherapist, massage therapist, or chiropractor who can treat the condition immediately and help ensure their future is pain-free.
