Hunter-Reay, Honda Finish Third in Detroit Finale

• Ryan Hunter-Reay scores second podium finish of 2016
• Conor Daly follows second-place finish on Saturday with sixth in Sunday's race
• Second race in doubleheader race weekend at Detroit

In what is becoming the norm for Verizon IndyCar Series races on the Belle Isle Park temporary street circuit, competing pit strategies split the field in Sunday's second race of the doubleheader event weekend in Detroit, as Ryan Hunter-Reay led the way for Honda with a third-place finish.  The result equaled the season-high for the 2014 Indianapolis 500 champion, who also finished third in the season-opening race in St. Petersburg, Florida.

As in yesterday's contest – and several previous events on the 2.35-mile circuit – roughly half the field elected to pit in the opening laps, hoping to gain track position when the rest of the field followed a "two-stop" strategy.  In the end, it proved to be the right call, as the "three-stoppers" finished 1-2-3, led by race winner Will Power.

Behind Hunter-Reay, Conor Daly piloted his Dale Coyne Racing Honda to a sixth-place finish, capping an excellent weekend for the series rookie, who finished second in Saturday's opening race.  Marco Andretti scored his first top-10 finish of 2016, with a ninth-place result, while Takuma Sato recovered from a multi-car Lap 1, Turn 1 crash to finish 10th.  After pitting on the first lap of the race due to a brake issue, Graham Rahal steadily worked his way through the field to finish 11th, with Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi finishing 12th.

Indy car's run of consecutive May-June events concludes next week, as the series heads south to Dallas-Fort Worth for Round Nine, the Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday night, June 11.

Ryan Hunter-Reay (#28 Andretti Autosport Honda) started 2nd, finished 3rd: "It's nice to come away with a podium finish here, and great to get the DHL Honda up to the front again.  We had a very solid car today, one that got better and better the longer the run became.  We just didn't have quite enough for the lead pair; they were really hooked up today.  I'm pretty happy, we had a good time out there, I just wish we could've finished a step or two higher on the podium."

Conor Daly (#18 Dale Coyne Racing Honda) started 21st, finished 6th:  "Once again, we had a pretty impressive charge up from the back of the field; not the first time this year I've said that!  Our Honda was a really good race car.  When you have a car that's competitive, it's really fun. I just hate that we had to start at the back. [Daly was penalized for causing a yellow flag in qualifying, losing his fifth-fastest time as a result and starting 21st]. But all-in-all, it was a great weekend with a second yesterday.  We have a nice bit of momentum going into [next week's race] Texas."

Art St. Cyr (President, Honda Performance Development) on today's race in Detroit:  "It was another wild day in Detroit, with various strategies in play from many of our teams.  The caution flags, unfortunately, did not always work to our advantage.  We'd hoped for better than a third-place result.  It was encouraging to see a strong race and podium finish for Ryan Hunter-Reay; and Conor Daly was in excellent form all weekend.  Next weekend is a chance to build on our superspeedway momentum, as we head to Texas after our great victory at the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500."
