Playworld and Architect Richard Dattner Bring PlayCubes Back to Life in Boston

Installed at Chinatown Park, PlayCubes Provide an Opportunity for Free Play on The Greenway

/EINPresswire.com/ -- BOSTON, MA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/16/16 -- Playworld, a leading commercial playground equipment manufacturer committed to saving outdoor unstructured play, today announced Chinatown Park on the Rose Kennedy Greenway is home to the company's first installation of PlayCubes, equipment offering a new form for open-ended play. Originally introduced in the 1960s by Architect Richard Dattner, an exclusive partnership between Dattner and Playworld is giving new life to the once popular playground.

The new kid-friendly feature in Chinatown Park will be highlighted during The Greenway-wide celebration on May 19 from 5-8 p.m. The kick-off to The Greenway's Public Art Season will include performances, food trucks, a free Boston Calling Block Party in Dewey Square and meet-and-greets with artists whose work is on display on The Greenway.

"The importance of outdoor play in the formation of a healthy childhood is well documented. Yet the concept is fast nearing extinction in urban areas across the country," said Missy Benson, a play advocate for Playworld. "The installation of PlayCubes on The Greenway presents a valuable opportunity for us to encourage millions of visitors to venture outdoors and engage in an experience that integrates play with exceptional design."

PlayCubes at Chinatown Park is an extension of the Design Museum Boston's Extraordinary Playscapes exhibition, featuring over 40 pioneering play spaces from around the world. Extraordinary Playscapes opens on June 8 at the Boston Society of Architects (BSA).

"We're thrilled to partner with Playworld and Design Museum Boston to bring PlayCubes to The Greenway," said Laura Jasinski, director of programs and planning for The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy. "These iconic play structures, a perfect addition to The Greenway's Chinatown Park, will provide hours of fun and unstructured play for locals and tourists throughout the summer."

PlayCubes at Chinatown Park will be on display through fall 2016.
