Greenbrier Academy -- L. Jay Mitchell Real World Learning Produces Great Leaders

/EINPresswire.com/ -- RAINELLE, WV -- (Marketwired) -- 04/19/16 -- It's already a proven concept that 'real world learning' produces great leaders. Bookwork and research can only take us so far. True success comes when individuals learn how to apply real world situations as their curriculum and develop an internal concept of being a 'lifelong learner.'

But how do we teach individuals how to view life as a classroom?

Many private academies, such as Greenbrier Academy for Girls, employ this style of learning as part of their curriculum, with excellent results.

"With the help of my colleague, we have created a powerful and effective therapeutic and academic model called Applied Relationality. Using this approach in the classroom helps students take what they learn and apply it to real life relational experiences. As a result, they begin to look at learning differently and become more successful in their studies and in life," stated L. Jay Mitchell, founder of Greenbrier Academy.

Educators are coming to the realization that many of their students are simply memorizing facts and then promptly forgetting them. The American Psychological Association featured an article based on the study of real-world learning by William Cerbin, a professor at the University of Wisconsin. When faced with the problem of students who simply guessed the answers to complex problems in the classroom instead of relying on the theory and facts he was teaching them.

His solution for solving this issue was to create a problem-based approach that gave the students the opportunity to analyze abstract, but probable issues and determine how they would solve them. Instead of moving from topic to topic, the students worked on one problem at a time, using the facts they were given to solve the problem.

Greenbrier Academy takes a similar approach, states L. Jay Mitchell, "Our teachers use the Quantum Learning Model, which emphasizes contextual, hands-on education. Instead of just sitting and reading facts, students are discussing and applying their knowledge. We have found that this model not only helps them gain knowledge, but reinforces learning and improves the amount of joy they find in learning. Instead of simply memorizing equations for their math tests, they create projects to help them understand how the equations work, as well as why they work."

Many schools across the country have experienced great success from this method of real-world learning. In fact, 96 percent of students from Greenbrier have gone on to attend college over the past few years. By giving students a way to take their classroom instruction out into the real world, teachers at Greenbrier and around the country are finding that students are more successful, more curious and more likely to develop a lifelong love for learning.
