Monroe Dentist Celebrates Children's Dental Health Awareness

MONROE, LA --(Marketwired - February 29, 2016) - The dental hygiene department of Bayou Dental Group visited several local elementary schools in February to teach children about the importance of home oral health care.

/EINPresswire.com/ -- February is National Children's Dental Health Month, and this year's program is called "Sugar Wars." Bayou Dental Group met with local students to discuss best oral health practices, provide toothbrushes and dental floss and share facts about the dangers of cavity-causing foods. "Our staff loves getting out in the community, especially when it means getting involved with children's dental health," said Dr. David Finley, who operates Bayou Dental Group. "A healthy smile means a healthier life, and we're very adamant about educating the children in this community and offering state-of-the-art preventive care."

Tooth decay is the number one chronic disease in children, and about 25 percent of children from the ages of 2 to 5 have untreated cavities. Dr. Finley is a certified pediatric dentist who recommends that parents bring in their young ones for visits by the age of 1 -- or six months after the first tooth pops in.

During a child's first dental visit, Dr. Finley will provide a thorough examination of the teeth, gums and mouth. When the child gets older, Bayou Dental Group will provide light cleanings and polishings. Dr. Finley said bringing children to the dentist early in their life reduces the risk of dental fear or extensive dental treatments in the future.

"We love seeing children in our office because we can coordinate their dental health from an early age," Dr. Finley said. "When young kids are in the dental office, they also feel more comfortable with the dentist later in their life."

Bayou Dental Group offers preventive dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry, pediatrics, endodontics, sedation dentistry and dental implant surgery. The dental practice provides some of the best cosmetic dentistry in the Monroe area, as well as root canals and state-of-the-art dental implants. Dr. Finley uses cone beam imaging technology for implant placement.

Dr. Finley has taken hundreds of hours in continuing education and is the 61st Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. There are fewer than 30 dentists in the world who hold both fellowships. He has been voted as one of America's Top Dentists by the Consumer Research Council of America every year since 2003.

Dr. Finley's connection to Monroe and the surrounding community stretches back to his years growing up there. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeast Louisiana University and then graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in 1985. He is one of the first dentists in Louisiana to be certified in laser treatment by the World Clinical Laser Institute.

Dr. Finley views dentistry as an art and is the only dentist to have earned medals five years in a row at the annual American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry smile gallery competition. He has published cases in the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry and has written articles for the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry and for the publication of the Louisiana Academy of General Dentistry.
