International Society of Scholars Condemns Fascistic Trends in the United States

The Bertrand Russell Society speaks out against positions it believes are inspired by fear, ignorance, and hatred that led to world war in the last century.

WINDSOR, COLORADO, USA, December 21, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), the renowned English philosopher, mathematician, and Nobel Laureate, denounced bigotry, ignorance, intolerance, and jingoism throughout his long life. The Bertrand Russell Society, an international organization of scholars and admirers of Russell’s work and ideals, has expressed concern and criticized what it views as disturbing trends and positions promoted by a small, but growing and vocal minority in the United States––trends and positions the Society believes are fomented by bombast and falsehoods that fuel intolerance, hatred, and bellicosity that are given nourishment through the skillful manipulation of the media, and that are fascistic in nature.

In particular, the Society condemns calls for identifying and tracking people based on their ethnicity or religion, and the collective punishment of innocents based on group identity or family relationships; whipping up passions of hatred and mistrust, and proposals for discrimination based on false narratives concocted to play upon people’s insecurity and fears; the callous treatment of and disregard for women, the disabled, and minorities; and advocating policies that are in violation of the U.S. Constitution, agreements among nations, and international law, including the Geneva Conventions.

The Society believes that, in combination, these trends and positions are eerily similar to developments in Europe in the last century by another vocal minority inspired by charismatic and bombastic personalities, developments that eventually led to untold oppression and a cataclysmic war resulting in the loss of millions of lives. The Society wishes to remind people of the philosopher George Santayana’s words, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
