Waste management can be considered a win-win business ground in South-East Europe. On the brink of the updates on the action plan for a 'competitive' circular economy, the Region is a crucial factor for achieving the European targets in waste management. The EU members from the Region have to recycle 70% of their construction waste, 50% of the municipal waste and 35% of biodegradable waste till 2020. Despite the progress, waste management still falls short for the European standards with low levels of reuse, recycling and energy recovery. Bulgaria will make investments of EUR 1,77 billion funded by the OP Environment (2014-2020). The other members and non-EU members also need to import new technologies. SE Europe has to accelerate the improvement of waste management under the influence of environmental threats and natural resources depletion. More countries are updating their legislation and policy measures, speeding up investments in new installations, rehabilitation of old dump sites and setting up of new regional landfills.
