New Herpes Blood Test Approved by the FDA; The CBCD Reviews a Report
“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given the green light for the finger-prick blood test for Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1).” (1)

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has approved a new blood test developed by the biotech startup, Theranos. According to company officials, the startup received the FDA approval letter on July 2, 2015. The new test checks for the presence of HSV-1 (the strain of herpes most often responsible for cold sores and fever blisters). It is unique due to the extremely affordable price, and ease of administration. “The HSV-1 test developed by Theranos retails for about $9.07, which makes it one of 100 products that Theranos sells for less than $10. Holmes says the traditional HSV-1 kit costs around $175. The tests are presently available at 42 branches of Walgreens in Arizona and one in California.” (1) Additionally, “The studies presented by Theranos, which involved 818 study participants, claim that the finger-prick test of either whole blood or plasma for HSV-1 developed by their company can be comparable, or at least be as reliable as the traditional venipuncture procedure approved by the FDA.” (1)
For those who learn that they may have a herpes virus infection, the Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) recommends taking Gene-Eden-VIR or Novirin. The formula of these natural antiviral products was designed to help the immune system target the latent form of the herpes virus.

The formula of Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin was tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the CBCD. The studies showed that the formula is effective against the herpes simplex virus, and other viruses. The clinical studies were published in the peer reviewed, medical journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy, the first, in a special edition on Advances in Antiviral Drugs. Study authors wrote that, “individuals infected with the HSV … reported a safe decrease in their symptoms following treatment with Gene-Eden-VIR.” (2) The study authors also wrote that, “we observed a statistically significant decrease in the severity, duration, and frequency of symptoms.” (2)

Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin are natural antiviral dietary supplements. Their formula contains five natural ingredients: Selenium, Camellia Sinesis Extract, Quercetin, Cinnamomum Extract, and Licorice Extract. The first ingredient is a trace element, and the other four are plant extracts. Each ingredient and its dose was chosen through a scientific approach. Scientists at polyDNA, the company that invented and patented the formula, scanned thousands of scientific and medical papers published in various medical and scientific journals, and identified the safest and most effective natural ingredients against latent viruses.
To date, Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR are the only natural antiviral products on the market with published clinical studies that support their claims. Note: Novirin has the same formula as Gene-Eden-VIR. However, it contains higher quality and more expensive ingredients.
Apparently, Theranos is not disclosing the details of how the test detects the presence of the HSV-1 virus. This lack of full disclosure is being criticized by academic experts. “Theranos has received numerous disapprovals from academic experts, citing the elusiveness of the company's methods of technology. These researchers particularly emphasized that the essential data of how the company works in comparison to others have not been explained.” (1)
CEO and founder of Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes said “We are proud to have received our first FDA clearance. In order to realize our vision of early detection, lab tests must meet the highest quality standards-standards that are comprehensively set by FDA.” (1)
Until now, drugs approved for the treatment of HSV infections include penciclovir, acyclovir, famciclovir, and valaciclovir. However, their effectiveness is limited. For instance, “a meta-analysis of five placebo-controlled and two dose comparison studies evaluated the effect of aciclovir, famciclovir or valaciclovir on symptoms. The meta-analysis showed that oral antiviral therapy decreases the duration and the associated pain of an outbreak by merely one day.” (2) Unlike drugs or vaccines, which target the active herpes virus, there are two natural remedies that target the latent HSV. These clinically backed remedies are Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR.
“We recommend that individuals who may be concerned about a herpes virus infection, get tested, and take Novirin or Gene-Eden-VIR, which were shown to reduce herpes symptoms in two separate post-marketing clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines.” - Greg Bennett, CBCD
