EBV May Cause Recurrent Tonsillitis; The CBCD Reviews the Medical Evidence
Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infection usually occurs in early childhood and can persist … inducing tonsillitis at a later date. (1)
EBV may be associated with the pathogenesis of recurrent tonsillitis.

“Infected with the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV)? The CBCD recommends taking Gene-Eden-VIR or Novirin.” - Greg Bennett, CBCD
A study showed that the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV), which normally causes infectious mononucleosis (the kissing disease), and which has been linked to numerous forms of cancer, may also cause recurrent tonsillitis. In fact, Dr. Dias and colleagues wrote in a study that EBV, which has colonized the tonsils, “may be associated with the pathogenesis of recurrent tonsillitis.” (1) Patient.co.uk notes that “Tonsillitis is inflammation due to infection of the tonsils,” (2) and recurrent or chronic tonsillitis is defined as “seven episodes of tonsillitis in the preceding year, five episodes in each of the preceding two years or three episodes in each of the preceding three years.”(3)
The CDC notes that “Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), also known as human herpesvirus 4, is a member of the herpes virus family. It is one of the most common human viruses. EBV is found all over the world. Most people get infected with EBV at some point in their lives.” (4) The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) recommends that individuals who suffer from chronic tonsillitis, where EBV is the cause, take Gene-Eden-VIR or Novirin. The formula of these natural, antiviral supplements was designed to help the immune system target the latent EBV.

The formula of Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin was tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the CBCD in two clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines. The studies showed that the formula is effective against the herpes family of viruses. The Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) is a member of the herpes family. The clinical studies were published in the peer reviewed, medical journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy, the first, in a special edition on Advances in Antiviral Drugs. Study authors wrote that, “individuals infected with the EBV … reported a safe decrease in their symptoms following treatment with Gene-Eden-VIR.” (5) The study authors also wrote that, “We observed a statistically significant decrease in the severity, duration, and frequency of symptoms.” (5)

Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin are natural antiviral dietary supplements. Their formula contains five natural ingredients: Selenium, Camellia Sinesis Extract, Quercetin, Cinnamomum Extract, and Licorice Extract. The first ingredient is a trace element, and the other four are plant extracts. Each ingredient and its dose was chosen through a scientific approach. Scientists at polyDNA, the company that invented and patented the formula, scanned thousands of scientific and medical papers published in various medical and scientific journals, and identified the safest and most effective natural ingredients against latent viruses.
To date, Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin are the only natural antiviral products on the market with published clinical studies that support their claims. Note: Novirin has the same formula as Gene-Eden-VIR. However, it contains higher quality and more expensive ingredients.
When EBV first infects an individual, the virus is “transmitted by saliva and invades the oropharyngeal epithelial cells, which are destroyed; it then infects circulating B lymphocytes, within which the virus becomes latent.” (1)
Dr. Nikolas Hedberg wrote that “a lot of people forget that Epstein-Barr Virus is a herpes virus. It’s in that family. It’s a gamma virus and it’s very different from the other herpes virus in that it’s the only one to infect B cells … it is transmitted by saliva, and the first place that it infects is the B cells in the tonsils. That’s where it germinates and that’s where it really sets up shop….” (6) Dr. Hedberg is a practitioner of “functional medicine.”
What treatments are available for EBV infections?
“A few antiviral drugs are available that were shown to inhibit EBV replication in cell culture. These drugs include the acyclic nucleoside analogues aciclovir, ganciclovir, penciclovir, and their respective prodrugs valaciclovir, valganciclovir and famciclovir, the acyclic nucleotide analogues cidofovir and adefovir, and the pyrophosphate analogue foscarnet. However, clinical studies have shown that these drugs are mostly ineffective in humans.” (5) There are also natural antiviral products that studies show to be safe and effective in reducing EBV symptoms. Two of these products are Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR.
“Based on the results of these studies, and the CBCD’s own research, we recommend that EBV infected individuals take Gene-Eden-VIR or Novirin.” - Greg Bennett, CBCD
