Equinix to Power Silicon Valley Data Center with Bloom Biogas Fuel Cells
May 2015 - Equinix, a global interconnection and data center company, has teamed up with Bloom Energy to announce a new biogas fuel cell project at Equinix's SV5 International Business Exchange data center in Silicon Valley, California. The 1-MW Bloom Energy fuel cells are expected to provide approximately 8.3 million kWh per year of electricity to power a portion of the SV5 data center. The fuel cells will be powered with biogas and will produce only water and a small amount of carbon dioxide as by-products. The project is expected to result in a 15 percent carbon dioxide reduction from what is currently being produced from the local PG&E grid, or at least 1.6 million pounds of avoided CO2; emissions from the California grid. This deployment of fuel cells goes towards Equinix's long-term sustainability goal of using 100 percent renewable energy across its platform of more than 100 data centers.
