Evolving from the idea born six years ago in her Freshman Composition course, MacQuarrie was prompted to devise an effective way of communicating the point being conveyed.
"While teaching about dashes and parentheses, a student asked if a comma could work instead. I responded that a comma would work, but it would not be as effective...Every semester since then, I taught the different marks of punctuation by explaining the personality of each mark. Students seemed to grasp this concept well and confidently used punctuation more effectively," shares MacQuarrie.
