'Mobilizing Student Veterans For Mission Success' Featured At CAEL International Conference

New Track Discusses Best Practices for Linking Learning and Work for Veterans

CHICAGO, IL, USA, July 3, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) will be highlighting best practices for serving student veterans in a special new track of its 2014 International Conference CAEL CEO and President Pamela Tate announced today. The track, "Mobilizing Student Veterans for Mission Success," will focus on strengthening the link between learning and meaningful careers for veterans.

"As we celebrate those who have selflessly served our country we also need to offer pathways for them to succeed when they return to the civilian world. We have collected some of the most knowledgeable leaders in the field to discuss everything from innovative support strategies for veterans in and outside of the classroom to Prior Learning Assessment (PLA), which recognizes college-level military learning for academic credit," said Tate.

The special track will be offered at CAEL's International conference, "Mobilize Learners, Revolutionize Assessment" November 12-14 at the Sheraton Chicago and will feature guest speakers, workshops, roundtable sessions, networking opportunities and social events all designed to determine how to best help student veterans.

Added Tate, "Attendees will also be interested in a general session we are hosting featuring some of the best minds in the field. D. Wayne Robinson, President and CEO of Student Veterans of America, Erica Borggren, Director of Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, Dr. Nivine Megahed, President, National Louis University and Michael Daniels, a student veteran, will also share their unique insights on this important issue."

Many veterans can face challenges after leaving service, and according to the May 2014 Bureau of Labor Statistics some 538,000 veterans are unemployed. Education and training can make the difference between a bright future and a dead end for these veterans. Colleges and universities often struggle to address the diverse needs of the recent influx of student veterans to maximize their success. In addition, college-level learning gained while in the military is not always recognized for college credit, especially if it is not part of formal training. Veterans need to find practical ways to transfer their prior professional experience and skills learned outside the classroom or training program to college course credit to help them complete their degrees.

For four decades, CAEL has demonstrated expertise in adult learning and career advancement, with its particular focus on non-traditional learners. As the many thousands of veterans return to school with support from the GI Bill, CAEL is uniquely positioned to offer programs and services that will help to build capacity in the workforce and educational systems to serve veterans, who -- with their unique circumstances, challenges and opportunities -- may be the most non-traditional of non-traditional students.. CAEL is working with these key stakeholders to promote supportive practices and increase educational and career opportunities for veterans. In addition, CAEL has assisted colleges and universities to develop programs that evaluate adults’ non-collegiate learning for college credit. CAEL is the recognized national expert on a method known as portfolio assessment, and its Ten Standards for Assessing Learning are used by colleges and universities, as well as accrediting organizations, across the country.
