On May, 2013, Cherryland Electric Cooperative, a Michigan-based distribution co-op, partnered with the municipal utility Traverse City Light and Power to build the 224 panel Solar Up North (SUN) Alliance Community Solar Project in northern Michigans Grand Traverse County. The cost of the shares in the program is below $500 a panel and below $400 with an energy optimization rebate. The primary participants in the community solar project are residential customers purchasing a single panel. The energy produced is net-metered into the nearby Cherryland office building. The participants are expected to be credited an average of $2 for the energy produced each month as a return on their initial investment.
