Today, students from King Edward VII & Queen Mary School will visit the Burton's Biscuit Company factory in Blackpool to get an exclusive insight into what it's like to be an engineer in the food and drink industry - the UK's largest manufacturing sector.

Members of the highly professional and experienced team at Burtons Biscuit Company, maker of some of world's best loved brands including Maryland Cookies, Jammie Dodgers and Wagon Wheels, will take the year 12 students on a 'behind the scenes' tour of the state-of-the-art and high-tech food production facilities. They will also take part in exciting activities to really bring engineering to life.

The visit forms part of food and drink manufacturers' drive to recruit students onto the industry-backed MEng Food Engineering degree at Sheffield Hallam University which has been specially designed to create a robust pipeline of skilled food and drink engineers and is delivered by the recently launched National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering.

The degree course at Sheffield Hallam University leads to a successful future career in the food and drink manufacturing industry and is developed by industry for industry. The course, designed to create employment-ready engineers, offers real job prospects for its graduates. Amongst several other benefits, students starting the MEng Food Engineering degree course in September 2014 and 2015 may be eligible for a Food and Drink Federation bursary of £2,500, guaranteed competitively-paid work placements and have exclusive access to jobs that are only on offer to course graduates (subject to final grades, references and employer recruitment processes).

Students interested in the degree can still apply for 2014 intake. For further details on the course and other student benefits, please go to Sheffield Hallam's website.

Jackie Kent, HR Director at Burton's Biscuit Company said: "The food and drink sector is often overlooked by young people as a career choice but the industry presents significant opportunities for those looking to develop a highly skilled career in what is a fast-moving and exciting environment, and so we're delighted to host the students today and support the Sheffield Hallam degree."

Kevin Maund, Assistant Head of Sixth Form at AKS said: "Visiting the Burton's Biscuit company factory has given our students an invaluable insight into food and drink manufacturing and has really brought to life what it's like behind factory doors. In today's market, Engineering skills and qualifications are highly valued and sought after, particularly in the food and drink sector and I'm certain this visit has given our students a taste of food engineering.
