Western Hemisphere: United States Announces New Contribution to the OAS Mission To Support the Peace Process in Colombia (OAS/MAPP)

The United States welcomes Colombia’s ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and to protect those who are working to make Colombia a more peaceful, democratic, and secure state. To this end, the United States supports the important and ongoing work of OAS/MAPP in Colombia.

Deputy Secretary of State Heather Higginbottom announced at the Organization of American States General Assembly in Asuncion, Paraguay, a new contribution in support of the OAS/MAPP Mission in the amount of $420,000. This support, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, will enable the OAS/MAPP Mission to advance its efforts in the areas of land restitution; reparation, truth, and reconciliation; justice, peace, and transitional justice; and disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration.

The United States also welcomes the recently revised strategic plan of the OAS/MAPP Mission, and will continue to engage in ongoing dialogue with OAS member states and other donors regarding its implementation. We continue to encourage the international community to support the efforts of the OAS/MAPP and the Government of Colombia in their common effort to seek a political solution to one of the world’s longest conflicts, respectful of rule of law and human rights.

The OAS/MAPP Mission was established in 2004, with the strong support of the United States, with the aim of supporting the peace process, the verification and monitoring of the government's peace policy, and the accompaniment of communities that have been victims of violence.
