Sexual Harassment Claims Against Ex-San Diego Mayor Filner Settled for $250K

A $250,000 settlement was approved to pay for sexual harassment claims, says San Francisco employment lawyer Eric Grover.

SAN DIEGO, CA, USA, May 23, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Irene McCormack Jackson, the communications director for former San Diego Mayor Bob Filner has settled with the city for $250,000, after she filed claims of sexual harassment against the former mayor, reports San Francisco employment lawyer Eric Grover.

The City Council approved the lump sum settlement on February 10, 2014, CBS 8 reported.

McCormack Jackson filed the sexual harassment lawsuit after Filner allegedly demanded kisses from her, as well as other sexual advances. He allegedly put his arm around her neck and pulled her along with him in a headlock-like position, all while expressing sexualized comments.

Last August, Filner, who was 70-years-old at the time, resigned from his position after less than nine months as mayor. His resignation was part of an agreement with the City’s Attorney’s Office to defend him in civil lawsuits alleging sexual harassment if he resigned from office.

Filner’s attorneys stated that moving forward with the trial would have cost both parties more money than what was settled upon.

Two other women have also filed complaints against Filner, but those cases are still pending. One of the plaintiffs, Stacy McKenzie, a city employee, said Filner groped her from behind and touched her breasts during an event at a city park. The second woman, Michelle Tyler, who was seeking help for a friend who was a Marine veteran, said Filner requested a personal and sexual relationship from her as quid pro quo.

“It is evident that even employment in government does not guarantee protection from sexual harassment,” says San Francisco employment lawyer Eric Grover. “In fact, based on recent history, it often seems that those in power feel that they are either above the law or separate from it. No one should have to endure harassment on the job and seeking help from an employment attorney is often an important step to ensuring your future.”
