In the article, “Leaving the Big Apple Behind,” Eduardo Vidal, former co-head of Latin America practice at New York law firm Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP, tells LACCA his 2012 move to corporate counsel in Houston – “the most dynamic business city in the Americas” – has been more than fruitful.  

“After the financial crisis of 2008, I felt New York was no longer the place to be, particularly for a lawyer focused on Latin American business,” Vidal told LACCA, stressing the crisis forced companies to rethink cost and efficiency, which put Latin America in a fantastic position as an outsourcing destination because of its proximity to the United States. 

“While India continues to be the largest offshore LPO provider, the industry is gaining strength in other destinations, such as Latin America.” Latin American countries like Costa Rica, Colombia and Argentina, have become regional leaders for both business process outsourcing (BPO) and legal process outsourcing (LPO) services. 

At IRR Strategies, which provides global solutions for underserved small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) throughnearshore, onshore and offshore business and legal process outsourcing, Vidal says he works as both a lawyer and a business executive. “I practice corporate law, while at the same time negotiating and executing cross-border transactions. Outsourcing can certainly reduce costs for businesses, however, the benefits go beyond cost. General counsel and their departments are also better able to prioritise their work load and operate more efficiently.” 

Vidal’s legal career began in Chicago in 1981, moving to New York in 1986 as an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, later becoming a partner. Vidal moved to Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP to develop the firm’s securities practice in Latin America and later became co-head of Latin America for Hughes Hubbard & Reed. Today, he focuses on arranging BPO and LPO services, and negotiating subcontracting agreements with suppliers based in North America, Latin America and Asia Pacific.
