Symphonic Prayers and Poems:
UCLA Philharmonia, UCLA Chorale, UCLA University Chorus
Neal Stulberg, conductor
Royce Hall
Tickets: $30–$50 general admission; $15 for UCLA students, staff and faculty (with ID)
"Symphonic Prayers and Poems" is an artistic statement about the power of music to transcend cultural and religious enmity. The concert will feature the West Coast premiere of Mohammed Fairouz's "Tahrir" for clarinet and chamber orchestra (2011); the North American premiere of Alexander Krein's "Kaddish" for tenor solo, chorus and orchestra, Op. 33 (1921–22); and the West Coast premiere of Fairouz's Symphony No. 3 ("Poems and Prayers") for mezzo-soprano and baritone soloists, chorus and orchestra (2010).
Fairouz's "Poems and Prayers" weaves Jewish sacred texts, verses by Israel's late poet laureate Yehuda Amichai and the poems of Arab literary giants Mahmoud Darwish and Fadwa Tuqan, while his "Tahrir" evokes the Arab Spring in Cairo. Krein's hauntingly powerful and rarely heard "Kaddish" poses primal questions of faith and doubt.
The evening will include musical performances by David Krakauer (clarinet), Sasha Cooke (mezzo-soprano), Ashley Faatoalia (tenor) and David Kravitz (baritone). The concert will be preceded by a 6 p.m. panel discussion.
