Despite its many achievements since the transition to majority rule in 1994, South Africa struggles with low growth, widespread unemployment, and sharp social tensions. In its latest assessment of Africa’s largest economy, the IMF projects growth will be 2.0 percent this year, half a percent lower than last year. Laura Papi, the IMF’s mission chief for South Africa says the country needs to pursue planned structural reforms to boost growth and create jobs for a growing population.
