Marine News: Jeppesen and KVH Intend To Team Up To Offer Positioning Data to Customers Using Pay-As-You-Sail Licensing

KVHs industry-leading connectivity to supplement the power and usability of Jeppesens OpenENC Pay-As-You-Sail licensing option

EGLEWOOD, COLO. | 04 Jun 2013 | By JEPPESEN

It is anticipated that mutual customers of Jeppesen and KVH Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq: KVHI) will soon be able to access affordable positioning data through their subscriptions to Jeppesens OpenENC Pay-As-You-Sail (PAYS) licensing system as well as its popular FleetManager reporting and analytical tool for shoreside managers. The anticipated strategic relationship between Jeppesen and KVH is expected to eliminate the need for vessels to use a stand-alone tracking unit or costly data from the vessels position finder to use OpenENC, which can add a significant amount of time and expense.

After brainstorming solutions with our contacts at KVH, we found an opportunity to make the complex simple for our customers, said Alex Zakroff, Jeppesen vice president/general manager, Marine. By integrating these best-in-class solutions, we expect to provide a way to make existing tools on a vessel do more by working together.

OpenENC PAYS provides free access to Jeppesens global ENC database for route planning, while charging only for the charts used. Jeppesen and KVH recognize that other positioning data such as AIS does not offer the 99.8% reporting accuracy required by the official specification for PAYS licensing. By utilizing a KVH TracPhone V-IP series antenna and mini-VSAT Broadbandsm service to transmit the necessary up-to-the-minute positioning data needed, this accuracy is expected to be available for Jeppesens OpenENC customers.

By eliminating one of the biggest pain points for PAYS users, we expect to bring more value to our customers, added Brent Bruun, KVH executive vice president, Mobile Broadband Group. We continue to work with Jeppesen to find ways to increase safety and efficiency while improving capabilities and workloads for mariners.

OpenENC is expected to be an ideal option for vessels that dont transit regular routes because the vessel will have all charts available and the ability to plan and sail a new route at a moments notice. As such, the PAYS model requires accurate and timely vessel position reporting in order to properly invoice for charts used. This anticipated Jeppesen/KVH solution is expected to remove the excessive costs and need for any additional equipment for vessel tracking, thereby opening the door to greater acceptance and use of PAYS chart licensing. The technology has undergone extensive sea trials and is expected to be available to mutual customers of Jeppesen and KVH beginning in late 2013, following their negotiation and execution of definitive contractual arrangements for the service.
