Prime Minister’s meeting with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Nadia Murad
LITHUANIA, November 29 - Earlier today, on 29 November, the Prime Minister of Lithuania Ingrida Šimonytė has met with Nadia Murad, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, the founder and president of Nadia’s Initiative, and the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador.
The Prime Minister and Nadia Murad have discussed the situation of the Yazidis in Iraq and Syria, the protection of women's rights during conflicts, and the hybrid attack by the Lukashenko regime.
The Prime Minister expressed support for Nadia Murad's activities in assisting victims of armed conflict, particularly women and girls who have been sexually abused, also in combating trafficking in human beings.
‘Although we are seeing progress in the fight against Daesh (ISIS), unfortunately there are still many armed conflicts in the world and authoritarian regimes are becoming ever more insolent, including on the European continent. Therefore, it is very important that democratic states, civil society and non-governmental organizations across the world support each other and coordinate their actions,’ said Ingrida Šimonytė.
Efforts from Lithuania, the EU and the entire international community required to help the Yazidis in Iraq to restore community life and the entire region after the occupation of ISIS have also been discussed.
In 2018, Nadia Murad became Nobel Peace Prize winner together with Congolese physician Denis Mukwege. Nadia Murad was awarded the prize for the efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war.
