JAIL GUITAR DOORS ANNOUNCES A MILESTONE.
Entry into Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility Is the Charity’s 100th Significant Act of Music Programming into US Prison System.
LOS ANGELES, CA, USA, August 31, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- --- Jail Guitar Doors2 (JGD3-USA), the Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization led by legendary guitarist Wayne Kramer1, announces that the organization will visit its 100th prison facility on Friday, September 8th.Jail Guitar Doors will enter the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility to present the institution with a dozen, brand new, Fender acoustic guitars and two cajones. In addition to the donation to the Arts-in-Corrections program there, Kramer will address participating inmates by discussing his own experience as a returned citizen. The attendees will also participate in a thirty-minute musical performance by Kramer and renowned singer/songwriter Jill Sobule.
And, while at Donovan, JGD-USA will make the significant announcement that inmates there will now have available to them songwriting workshops. Through the JGD-USA programs nationally, successful songwriting workshops are ongoing at Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Downtown Los Angeles, CA; Travis County Correctional Complex (TCCC) in Austin, TX; the Cook County Jail in Chicago, IL; California Institution for Women (CIW) in Chino, CA; California Rehabilitation Center (Norco State Prison) in Norco, CA; and more. Additionally, JGD-USA runs programs in four separate Los Angeles County Probation youth camps.
The Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility is a state prison located on 780 acres in the unincorporated southern San Diego County. It is part of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and is the only state prison in San Diego County.
Wayne Kramer has been a political activist since the late 1960s when he formed his influential band MC5. Today he remains an activist through his non-profit Jail Guitar Doors (JGD-USA), which he co-founded nine years ago with fellow musician Billy Bragg and his wife Margaret Saadi Kramer. JGD-USA's main purpose is to aid in the rehabilitation of prisoners by donating guitars, organizing lessons, and putting on concerts at prisons across the country.
JGD-USA has developed songwriting programs in which inmates write on particular themes, for example, family, home, children, love, harm, forgiveness, and responsibility. This process helps inmates learn new and non-confrontational methods to negotiate complex feelings. JGD-USA also provides instruments to support facilities that already have music programs in place and presents to educators and Arts-in-Corrections professionals on the efficacy of inmates practicing the life-living skills of listening, self-discipline, and cooperation. Since its inception, Jail Guitar Doors has actively sought to restore humanity in a forgotten portion of our citizens: The incarcerated.
ABOUT JAIL GUITAR DOORS
JAIL GUITAR DOORS is a California 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides musical instruments and opportunities to help rehabilitate prisoners. In 1977, punk rock pioneers, The Clash, recorded “Jail Guitar Doors,” a song detailing the imprisonment of their hero and fellow musician, the MC5’s Wayne Kramer. In 2009, musicians/activists Wayne Kramer and Billy Bragg joined forces to create Jail Guitar Doors USA, which organizes prison outreach programs and advances new solutions to diminish prison violence. JGD-USA works for justice and prison reform in the United States while partnering with social service groups to help people in prison reconnect with the outside world.
